GENERAL INFORMATION

How much of my donation makes it to the children in need?
Nearly 100%. Foyer de Sion, Inc. is a volunteer nonprofit board and takes no administrative fees from donations. All money donated to Foyer goes straight to programs and supplies that benefit the children. The only fees we incur are PayPal transaction fees (PayPal takes a small percentage - around 2% - of all donations made through their platform ) and international wire transfer fees from our bank when we transfer funds to Haiti.

Are my donations tax deductible?
Yes! Foyer de Sion is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in the United States.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

What is my commitment as a Sponsor?

Regardless of the amount you choose to donate, we ask that all sponsors commit to sponsoring a child for a minimum of 12 months.

What are the different sponsorship options available and what do they cover?

There are three ways you can sponsor a child at Foyer de Sion:

  • Full cost of care: $130/month

  • Education and school uniforms: $50/month

  • Food: $30/month

What is the breakdown of the annual costs of care per child?

Your donation covers your sponsored child’s food, school tuition, school uniforms and supplies, medical costs, clothing, and a portion of the nanny care.

  • Food: $360

  • School tuition: $500

  • School uniforms & supplies: $100

  • Medical supplies: $200

  • Clothing & other supplies: $200

  • Nanny care:  $200

Although toddlers don't use school costs, that amount is replaced by the need for formula, diapers, increased medical care, and increased nanny time.

May I have a picture of the child I am sponsoring?

Yes. The Foyer de Sion board will provide you with updates and a photo of the child you are sponsoring every six months.

May I choose the child I sponsor?

We are not able to accommodate child-specific requests, but can match you with children based on basic preferences (e.g., gender, age range, etc.). Please include these preferences in the "Other Comments" section of the sponsorship commitment form.

May I correspond with the child I sponsor?

Yes. You are welcome to write letters and to send pictures or small gifts to the child you sponsor.  Given the complications of mailing items to the orphanage, we ask that you send all letters to a member of our board.  We can then ensure that your correspondence is delivered to the orphanage by one of our many volunteer groups, who visit Foyer de Sion approximately once per month.  While we cannot promise that you will receive an individual response from your sponsored child, please know that your support and outreach is very much appreciated.

Please note: We ask you to exercise good judgment in deciding what to send the children.  Costly gifts are discouraged, and electronic devices are forbidden.  Should you sponsor an older child, please refrain from connecting with him or her online or over social networks.

What happens if my circumstances change and I am no longer able to give?

We realize that circumstances change.  If you are no longer able to sponsor a child at Foyer de Sion, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can quickly find a replacement sponsor.

Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Yes. Foyer de Sion, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Who do I contact to make my commitment or to request more information?

Please contact Janice McArthur at JaniceMcArthur@gmail.com

TRAVEL INFORMATION

How many days is a volunteer trip?

The length of volunteer trips vary, but most are between four and 10 days, not including time required to get to and from our departure airport (either JFK, FLL or MIA). A typical trip might leave from MIA early on a Friday morning and return to MIA late on Monday evening.

How much does a volunteer trip cost?
The cost of volunteer trips also varies. Typically, a five-day trip will cost about $2000. This estimate includes:

• Economy airfare from MIA, JFK or FLL to PAP

• Hotel in Port-Au-Prince

• Food and other basic expenses

• In-Country Transportation Fees

• Trip Fees of $300-$400 (used to cover cost of trip leader, translator, driver and more)

• Insurance

Do I need a passport and visa to travel to Haiti?

Yes. Passports are required, but visas are not required for US citizens.

What immunizations, if any, are required to enter Haiti?
No immunizations are required, but it is highly suggested that you consult with your doctor before traveling to Haiti. In addition, Passport Health is a reputable travelers' medical services provider. And the Centers for Disease Control posts regularly updated information for travelers to Haiti.

Is it better to make a volunteer trip, or to just donate an equivalent amount of money?

The love and attention which volunteers provide to Foyer de Sion's children is invaluable. With limited resources, it can be difficult for staff to give all of the children one-on-one attention each day — but volunteers can help to fill that gap.  Additionally, volunteers can transport in-kind donations (diapers, clothing, formula, medical supplies, etc.), which are prohibitively expensive to ship.

What will I be doing as a volunteer?

Although most volunteers find themselves doing a little bit of everything, we have five main areas of focus for our volunteer travel program:
• Assisting Caregivers at Foyer de Sion

• Playing games and making crafts with the children

• Construction and maintenance at the orphanage

• Practicing English with the older children

• Volunteering at the children's school

How frequently do you plan volunteer trips?
On average, a member of our board leads a volunteer trip to Foyer de Sion every three to four months.

If I want to bring some small gifts for the kids, what do you recommend?

Almost any appropriate gift will be greatly appreciated.  Some favorites include beads and other crafts, small picture books, small jewelry for the girls, sports cards or balls, Hotwheels cars, etc. (In the past, volunteers have brought stuffed animals and large children's books, but we don't recommend them because they use up quite a bit of luggage space.)

Will there be a translator?

Not with the children, but there will most likely be at least one person with our group that can speak both Creole and English. You'll be surprised, however, by how much can be communicated through song, dance and play.

Will we visit any sites other than the volunteer sites?
Factors such as the trip duration and the availability of transportation will determine (trip by trip) whether there is an opportunity to visit locations other than our volunteer sites.

How do you get from the US to Port-Au-Prince?
Most major US airlines offer direct flights to Port-au-Prince airport (PAP) including American Airlines, Delta, United, Jet Blue, and Spirit. The most common points of departure in the United States are Miami (MIA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Atlanta (ATL), and New York City (JFK).

Why do you insist that all volunteers travel to Haiti together?

Haiti can be chaotic and difficult to navigate — especially for first time visitors. To streamline our planning (and for safety reasons) it is imperative that we travel as a group at all times — including entering and leaving the country.

Question
When (and to whom) do I submit my necessary liability forms?

Answer
The trip leader will set the due date for submission of the forms.
