How long will the process take?

Picture of Haitian boyAs with all adoptions, much will depend upon you. Most families can get their home study and dossier ready in 2 to 3 months. The first step of the process is to make an appointment with a home study agency or social worker to begin your home study assessment. Once your paperwork is gathered, translated, and authenticated, it is sent to Haiti. At this point you will receive a referral. The Haiti portion of the process is currently taking 18 to 36 months - actual times may vary. The adoption is finalized before the parents travel.

How do I find a child to adopt?

Once your dossier is submitted for translation, a referral is given within 2-4 weeks. Parents specify the criteria the orphanage will use in selecting their child. The orphanage selects a child and then sends photos, medical information and the child's story to the agency. Families are asked to give the referral careful consideration. If they accept the referral, they are asked to sign an acceptance letter. If they decline, another referral will be made within 1 month.

Can I adopt more than one child at a time?

Any child that does not pass the rigorous screening is not accepted into the orphanage.

Are adoptive families required to provide post-placement reports to Haiti and Foyer de Sion?

Although no formal post-placement reports are required (unless required by agency, state, or national law), Foyer de Sion require 5 updates in the first two years after placement. These updates should be sent after the adoptive child has been home for 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. These updates should consist of a brief paragraph or letter with photos attached, describing the child's current growth and accomplishments. In the event that the adoptive family does not send the requested report, a formal post-adoption report will be requested at the expense of the adoptive family.
