Get Involved: New Orphanage

Building the Future of Foyer de Sion

At present, Foyer de Sion is comprised of three rented orphanages. The yearly rent to house and protect the children under our care is staggering — over $20,000 a year. It is our goal to build a facility large enough to house all of our children in one location. Having our own facility will not only provide significant cost savings, but will also allow us to better care for the physical, emotional, social, medical and educational needs of the children.

The planned facility has three floors and approximately 30 bedrooms. There will be a floor which houses an in-house medical clinic, pharmacy and our own infirmary. The infirmary will allow us to better isolate those children who are sick from those who are healthy, thus reducing the spread of germs. We will also be able to have one floor for older children and another for the infants, allowing us to tailor our care in more age appropriate ways.

Our new orphanage will also provide on-site housing for caregivers, volunteers and adoptive families. In addition to the obvious benefits for the caregivers, on-site housing will reduce the cost of volunteering at Foyer de Sion by eliminating the need to stay at a hotel and travel to the orphanage every day. By reducing the costs associated with volunteering, it is our hope that we'll be able to recruit even more volunteers to come and share their talents and services with us. On-site housing will also allow adoptive families the option of staying at the orphanage which is beneficial to both the adopted child and the family. The child benefits by allowing a gradual release from their old, safe and secure environment into the new environment with their adoptive family. The benefits for the adoptive family include being able to be a part of their child's environment — helping them better understand what has shaped their child's life.

Additional land has been purchased adjacent to the site so that we might grow fresh vegetables and food for the orphanage. In addition to providing the children with the produce, this garden will also give them somewhere to work — thus teaching them the value of work and of contributing to the well-being of a "family" and society. Growing our own food will also cut down on the funds needed to buy food to nourish the children.

We will have our own well at the new orphanage. This well will provide clean, filtered water to the children living at Foyer de Sion. Currently, Foyer de Sion spends over $1000 per month to purchase filtered water for the orphanages. Having this well will be a wonderful asset and will allow us to use the funds normally used for water to pay for other necessities such as electricity, fuel and caregivers' salaries. Another benefit of this well will be our ability to give back to the community surrounding the orphanage by sharing our clean water with those living next to us. We are most excited to be able to use this gift to bless the lives of those around us in the community.

Getting Involved

So many loving and caring people have donated their time and money to help the orphanage construction. It’s been such a wonderful blessing!

In December of 2008, we received an amazing Christmas gift. The Morrell Foundation granted Foyer de Sion orphanage $400,000.00 to help with the construction of the orphanage! The prayers by so many have been answered. We are so grateful to the Morrell family for being guided in Foyer’s direction. Construction is fast underway. In fact, the third floor is built and the ceiling is on.

Since the inception of the building in 2004, construction costs have risen around the world. Haiti is no exception. The construction company current estimate for the completion of the orphanage is $650,000.00. We are still in need of $250,000.00. We always welcome financial donations and volunteering of time to help complete the orphanage. Your donation, whether financial or physical, towards the new orphanage will allow us to move forward in blessing the lives of the children of Haiti on a larger scale.
