Adopting from Haiti: Overview

Picture of Haitian girl Haiti is a beautiful island country located East of Cuba in the Caribbean. It shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. With the recent 7.0 earth quake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010 Haiti has caught the attention, the concern and support of the world.

There is an urgent need to aid the Haitian people. Prior to the earth quake there were over 300,000 orphans. It is unclear how many additional children have been orphaned due to the devastaion of the earthquake. But we know there are and will be many children that will need loving and caring homes.

Foyer de Sion has over 200 children in their care ranging in age from Newborns to 15 years. If you would like information about adopting a child or children from Foyer De Sion please reach out to one of the Agencies that we work with. Be advised that as of January 12, 2010 the Joint Council on International Children's Services posted the following announcement regarding Haitian adoptions

"Haiti is currently CLOSED to new adoptions by US citizens.

PLEASE NOTE: As of January 12, 2010, the day of the devastating Haiti earthquake governmental and legal procedures to process an adoption in Haiti have been impossible to carry out. Until further notice the best way to support the needs of the children in Haiti is to donate money to international aid organizations dealing with the disaster. Adoptions in Haiti cannot be processed according to Haitian or US law during the current emergency. Consult this page and the Haiti page at adoption.state.gov for up to date information about adoption from Haiti.

Joint Council is working with the U.S. government to determine the impact of the devastation on the adoption process. The coming days will be rightly focused on rescue efforts, it will take not weeks, if not months to fully assess the impact on adoptions and develop a plan to move forward with specific cases.

Additional updates on Haiti can be found on the JCICS blog"

The agencies associated with Foyer de Sion work closely with JCICS and will be able to provide answers to any questions you might have. The will also have the latest information regarding Haitian adoptions.

In the interim we can truly use your help. Please get involved and help us bring sorely needed aid to the children of Foyer de Sion.
